Like many who have become mental health professionals, my journey toward becoming a counselor blossomed from the muck of early childhood trauma. It was taboo for me to seek counseling but it was acceptable for me to become a counselor. In my early 20s, my first counseling session was flooded with my tears. I could barely speak through the shame of needing help. My counselor at the time was patient and kind. He taught me self-compassion and accountability. Meanwhile, I sought avenues to build a career based on giving back to others what I was lacking growing up: the support and education to heal and grow. The expressive arts have always been a source of comfort and healing for me. When I was a kid and everyone asked "what do you want to be when you grow up", I would reply, "an artist for Disney". Until I was an adult, I thought this dream conflicted with my passion for psychology until I learned that I could incorporate the arts into treatment. Since then, I have become trained and educated as an Art Therapist. Growing up, I was raised to think like an innovator. The scientific method and problem-solving has become my default thought process. In order to serve youth virtually across North Carolina, I have begun the journey of incorporating Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT) into treatment. This treatment compliments my work with teens and women struggling with anxiety, depression, and phobias well. I also have been intensively training in DBT and Theraplay modalities. I am constantly learning new things and I read at least 1 new book per week. I am a lifelong spiritual seeker and maintain a daily connection to my creator. When I'm not building my practice and seeing clients, I am spending time with my husband, two adorable children, hiking or playing games at home. I'm excited to meet new people and learn new things!

Counseling is such meaningful and rewarding work and I am so grateful that I get to do it. My goal is to always be growing as a person right alongside you and to always approach my work with a sense of openness and curiosity rather than judgment. After all, we’re just two humans talking about being human. My hope is that you can learn to further embrace your humanness and leave behind your shame in the process. While talk therapy can be extremely valuable, I recognize that there are some problems that conventional talk therapy can’t quite reach, which is why I typically use a more experiential, trauma-focused approach to counseling. View 5 Photos I also specialize in working with dissociation, substance abuse, couples, and adolescents. I am trained in EMDR and Internal Family Systems but pull from a variety of other approaches as well. You can find out more about my approach and specializations on my website. I also offer supervision for LCMHCs and LCAS-As. Healing and growth can only happen in an environment where you feel safe. While I would hope this is true for any counselor you choose, I think it's important that I mention a few things: I am LGBQIA and trans affirming, sex positive, dedicated to anti-racism, and I believe survivors. Please feel free to reach out if you think I could be a good fit for you.

At some point in life, we all need to reach out for help. Whether we find ourselves repeating old patterns, struggling to create the life and relationships we want for ourselves, or overwhelmed by our emotional pain, there comes a time when we realize we need extra support. I am here to create a space where you are truly heard, seen, and accepted. I will sit with you in those dark and confusing places. And when you are ready, I will assist you in making the changes you wish to make. The journey toward healing begins the moment we reach out for help and I would be honored to support you in taking that first step.

Therapy can be a powerful way to make changes in your life. Having a therapist that you can rely on, should offer consistent support for those changes. My approach is motivational to help you identify ways to positively meet your needs by shifting your thoughts and behaviors. I often include a somatic approach to connect sensations in the body to the mind for healing. I will not expect you to relive any past trauma, but will support your readiness to explore areas of resiliency. I utilize DBT for skill building to regulate emotions, lessen distress & chronic pain, increase mindfulness, and build interpersonal effectiveness skills. I am a yoga therapist that utilizes Subtle Yoga techniques (trauma informed for emotional healing and chronic pain relief.) I also offer EMDR to process & heal from unprocessed trauma. I specialize in working with adults that have trauma, chronic pain, mental health and addiction. Other areas I work with are: depression, anxiety, chronic pain, borderline personality disorder, bipolar, trauma, domestic violence, addiction, communication skills, and anger management.

I've always wanted to incorporate animals into therapeutic activities. My family has 4 dogs and 2 cats, all rescues and I’ve volunteered with APS of Durham for over 10 years. Animal assisted therapy is generally done with the therapist's personal animal. My pre-Covid sessions were typically in home with you and your pet, developing more connection and emotional support. I’ve had to move to telehealth and with a small practice am limited in taking on many new clients. I am able to schedule weekdays or evenings. I try to keep personal life balance but also be available and flexible to support you when you need. View 10 Photos Whether you have a life challenge or stress and issues getting in the way, we can work through it together. Sometimes, seeking help is the best way to put things into perspective. I've counseled parents, adolescents and adults on issues around LGBTQ, medical/chronic health and developmental disability, career and other life transitions. After working in medical rehab, I completed my masters in Rehabilitation Counseling focusing on accommodations and independence for individuals with disabilities. My interest in mental health, I try to support you how you need. I'm completing my Animal-assisted Psychotherapy certification and sharing my connection to animals with clients.
